Martin County high school closing for the year

MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) -- We've learned the only high school in Martin County won't be open for students this school year.

The Martin County School Board voted tonight to close Sheldon Clark High School over fears that nearby construction blasting damaged the building and made it unsafe.

School leaders say they had no choice but to move the school's students elsewhere.

"I hate that we have to lose Sheldon Clark," said Dr. Robert Fletcher, Sheldon Clark principal. "I hate that it has to come to this, but right now we're kind of in an emergency situation."

School leaders say for this school year the High School students will have classes at Inez Middle School, and middle school students will go to Warfield Middle School.

They've also pushed back the first day of school until August 21st.

As for what will happen to Sheldon Clark High School school leaders say that's still up in the air.
