Mayfield named Ky. public health commissioner

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Dr. Stephanie Mayfield has been appointed to be Kentucky's next public health commissioner.

Mayfield has been director of Kentucky's public health laboratory since April 2005. The Cabinet for Health and Family Services says Mayfield has also been a lecturer on rotation at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville medical schools and is currently an associate professor at U of L.

Mayfield says it's up to the agency to work around the clock to keep people healthy by coordinating with local health departments and others. She also credited the work of citizens who limit the spread of disease through vaccinations, practicing food safety, screenings and routine checkups.

Mayfield replaces Dr. William Hacker, who retired last year. Dr. Steve Davis, deputy commissioner, has been acting commissioner for 14 months.
