Mayor accused of abuse of public trust

Posted: Fri 5:37 PM, Nov 16, 2012

WALTON, Ky. (AP) - The newly elected mayor of a northern Kentucky city has been arrested and charged with abuse of public trust.

The Boone County sheriff's office says 62-year-old Walton Mayor-elect Phil Trzop (TER'-zop) is also general manager of the Boone County Water District. The sheriff's office says it found that Trzop used cash from scrap metal sales to give Christmas bonuses to employees but said he later acknowledged having money at his house and gave it to detectives.

Trzop was being held at the Boone County jail in lieu of $50,000 bond after his arrest Friday. Online jail records did not indicate whether he has a lawyer.

The Kentucky Enquirer said Trzop was sworn in as mayor of Walton four days before his arrest.
