FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his main Democratic rival were almost dead-even in the amount of campaign contributions they took in during the last quarter of 2013.

But McConnell had a decided cash-on-hand advantage over Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes heading into the election year.

The five-term senator's campaign said Friday that McConnell raised $2.22 million in the final three months of last year. Grimes' campaign said she collected $2.1 million during the period.

McConnell ended the year with $10.9 million in the bank. Grimes had almost $3.5 million on hand.

So far, McConnell has raised $20 million for the election, while Grimes closed in on $5 million.

Grimes is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in May.

McConnell is being challenged in the GOP primary by Louisville businessman Matt Bevin.
