Mercer Co. man sentenced to life in prison for 2009 murder

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - He was convicted of killing a Central Kentucky mother. Tuesday, Paul Estes faced a Mercer County judge to learn how long he will spend behind bars for the crime.

Police say Estes conspired with Meghan Brooks to kill her mother, Debora, in 2009.

Estes didn't show much emotion during his sentencing to life without the possibility of parole for 25 years. It comes just a week shy of the five-year anniversary of Debora Brooks's death. Harrodsburg police say Brooks's daughter Meghan Brooks and Meghan's boyfriend Paul Estes killed her. Investigators say the pair suffocated her with a pillow, and then wrapped a plastic bag around her head.

Meghan Brooks pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. She is serving a 17-year sentence from that plea deal. Estes's family felt he deserved a sentence similar to Brooks.

Tuesday afternoon, he stood before a judge for his formal sentencing. He will serve life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
