Mercer County teen shot while playing video game

MERCER COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A teenager is in the hospital after being shot in her home.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a possible shooting in Burgin on Tuesday night. When deputies arrived, they found a 15-year old girl with a gunshot wound to the leg. She was hit in the upper thigh. The girl was flown to a hospital in Lexington for treatment.

Police say the victim was playing video games with her mother's 24-year old fiance when he got up to leave. In the process, police say he picked up what he thought to be an unloaded firearm. The 40 caliber handgun semi automatic went off, hitting the girl in the thigh.

The mother of the victim told the sheriff's office that she is recovering well and that all handguns were removed from the home.

The Commonwealth Attorney's Office will present the case to a grand jury to decide if charges should be filed.

Child Protective Services is also investigating.
