Miners without jobs get extra help

Posted: Sat 6:32 PM, Nov 24, 2012

HI HIAT, Ky. (WYMT) - Many Eastern Kentucky coal miners will be without a job this holiday season, but a group in Floyd County made this Christmas a little easier for their families Saturday.

They didn't even have to get out of their cars, before each trunk was filled with food, but the families in line were not there by chance.

“We went from classroom to classroom, and we asked the children and said are you in a mining family,” said volunteer Keith Smallwood.

Volunteers from God's Care Ministries found 70 miners that were recently laid off and need a little help for the holidays.

“We wouldn't have what we have here if it was not for them, and it's just a way of paying them back for the things that they've done in the past,” said Smallwood.

A total of 7,000 lbs of fruit, beans, canned goods and other items were given out.

Volunteers said they understand the position most families are in.

“There's so much need and a lot of people don't see it, and I'm here to support the coal miners,” said volunteer Debbie Hall.

Like each family in line, Debbie recalled when her family was helped as a child.

“I remember on Christmas we had a food basket and I will never forget it. I told God when I saw that basket, I said Lord if you'll bless me I will help others,” said Hall.

A promise they will keep for anyone who needs it.
