More Shigella cases pop up in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The number of Shigella cases is on the rise in Lexington.

According to Fayette County Health Department, there are now 39 cases of Shigella infections in Lexington, 22 confirmed and 17 probable. The number of cases stood at 35 last week.

Most of the infected are children. Shigella can cause people to develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, starting a day or two after they are exposed to the bacteria. It is often spread through pool water.
