Mother of Halloween accident victim talks about lessons learned from tragedy

ALBANY, Ky. (WKYT) - Pumpkins and scarecrows….signs of fall…yet also a painful reminder of the tragedy that shocked a Clinton County community nearly a year ago. Five year old Aleigha Duvall died after she was hit by a truck while trick or treating.

Aleigha’s mother knows sometimes it takes the worst of times….to bring out the best in others.

“I’ve seen a community pull together and offer support to my family,” said Misty Hickman.

Stores have orange ribbons on their doors in memory of Aleigha. And her family is on a mission to make sure others don’t experience the same pain they have.

“It’s just a reminder of how precious life is. If we can help somebody else and make it better that’s what we want to do…that what she would want,” said Hickman.

Shortly after the accident, the Albany City Council passed an ordinance asking that parents put reflective tape on their children’s Halloween costumes.

Hickman says she’s also asking drivers to slow down..and keep an extra eye on little ones who might dart in front of them.

“Maybe who can prevent another family from going through what we experienced,” said Hickman.

Yet Hickman says her daughter’s loss has taught her and others to cherish the things in life that truly matter.

“It definitely makes you remember how important family is. And how important family around you knows how important family is,” she said.
