LONDON, Ky. (WKYT) - A mother accused of abandoning her newborn, who later died, has pleaded not guilty to abandoning the infant.

Rachel Kilburn was arraigned in Laurel County Wednesday morning, where a judge said the facts of the case were among "the top five most heinous" he had ever dealt with.

Investigators say Kilburn left her 10-week-old girl with Kilburn's boyfriend's brother and grandfather, who deputies say were not capable of taking care of a baby.

The baby was found unresponsive and later died.

Investigators say Kilburn left the child so she could spend two days partying with her boyfriend, Jonathan Haynes.

Haynes was charged with DUI. He pleaded guilty to that charge Wednesday in court.

A preliminary hearing in Kilburn's case is scheduled for September 6.
