Mother says bus driver dropped her 5-year-old off alone at wrong location

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The first day of school had a rough ending for some parents and students at The New Kindergarten Academy in Madison County.

Madison County school leaders say there was a delay in getting buses to the school Wednesday afternoon.

Some parents told us they're furious because they say buses dropped off their children at the wrong place.

“This is his first day of kindergarten and he's excited. We’ve been looking forward to this for a very long time,” said Whitney Martin, stepmother of 5-year-old Myles Masten.

But Myles’ excitement faded into fear after the school day was over when he boarded a bus that was supposed to bring him to Roses Rascals Daycare.

“He was on the bus for more than two hours,” Martin told us. “The bus driver refused to take him to Roses Rascals.”

“I told the bus driver that we had to go to daycare but he didn't listen because he said he was going to drop me off at mommy’s,” said 5-year-old Myles.

“I heard a kicking at my door and opened it and found my child by himself sitting outside crying in tears,” explained Jamie Spencer, Myles’ mother.

The policy for the Madison County School System is that drivers aren't allowed to drop off kindergarteners without visual confirmation with an adult but Myles’ parents say the bus driver failed to implement that policy in a big way.

“It’s really hard to trust someone who will just drop a five year old off in your front yard with no parent there to receive them, no one to get them off the bus, you don’t even know if they're home or not.”

Although Myles' mother is hugely relieved that she was home, she might be changing his mode of transportation to school to ensure that her precious cargo is kept safe.

We also heard from another parent of a child at The New Kindergarten Academy and she says that her daughter faced a similar situation on Wednesday.

Wednesday afternoon. The spokesperson for the Madison County School District said she was unaware of these incidents.
