She says no mother should ever have to go through the pain she did. A Central Kentucky woman is turning the death of her young son into something that can protect other children.

Six-year-old Charlie Semones died earlier this year, after an SUV hit his bike in Frankfort. Now, his mother is talking to WKYT about what she's doing to save young lives.

The pain of losing a son is still visible on Michelle Semones's face. She lost her 6-year-old Charlie back in April, when he was riding his bike on Excel Court and an SUV hit him. He died shortly after entering Frankfort Regional Medical Center, the same center now hosting a Kid's Safety Day, in part to honor Charlie.

The event is one Michelle Semones says, at first, she didn't want to be part of, "but the more I thought about it, I decided that I wanted to just so that something like what I have been through, no one else had to experience."

On Saturday, she'll help pass out bike helmets to children participating in Charlie's Challenge, a bike safety course. "We believe that this is part of the healing process for everybody," explains Frankfort Regional Medical Center's Charlotte O'Neal. She says the short time Charlie spent at their hospital affected everyone.

"So we felt we had an opportunity to take a tragedy and make something good come of it."

Charlie's Challenge will be set up in the back parking lot of Frankfort Regional Medical Center from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Children will receive free helmets during the event, and can register to win a free bike. Parents can participate in child safety seat checks, and learn more about pool safety and poison control. The event is free and open to all families.
