MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (WKYT) - A 106 year old central Kentucky business is shutting its doors while giving back to the community that gave to them.
Cox's Hardware has been a fixture in downtown Mount Vernon for more than a century.
The Cox family has been there for three generations, but the owner wants to retire, and the business is shutting down.
"It's bittersweet for me. I'm in the selling business and I enjoy auctions and I enjoy selling, but at the same token, what it means to everybody in this community it's a sad day to see it close" said Sam Ford, Auctioneer.
Ford has come to the hardware store since he was a kid.
"My dad had a charge account and I remember getting things for him," said Ford.
Inside the store, there's a potbelly stove that goes back to 1913, and an old moonshine kit, but everything must go.
An interesting purchase from the auction was an anvil for $800. The auction will continue on Saturday.
