CRAWFISH, Ky. (WYMT) – State Police are investigating a murder out of Clay County.
A muddy trail and tire marks led to where a body was found Saturday afternoon.
The Clay County Coroner said the remains of a white man were found, and that the body was burned beyond recognition.
Police are waiting for autopsy results to make any identification.
“There's an autopsy being done as we speak in Frankfort, and so hopefully by the end of the day we'll have a preliminary cause of death,” said Don Trosper with Kentucky State Police.
However, people living in the area fear they know who it could be.
Locals say a man named Eli Marcum has been missing for nearly a week.
They say it was during a search by family members of Marcum that the body was found on Saw Mill Hollow in the Crawfish community.
Police were forced take four wheelers to the crime scene which is just about two miles up the trail.
The investigation is ongoing.
“They're following up on leads. They're trying to ascertain who this person is, their identity; so they're following up on that, and of course who might have caused the death,” said Trosper.
A family and community will continue to search for answers.
