HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) - Northern Kentucky University has taken a step toward becoming tobacco-free.
The board of regents voted unanimously Wednesday to direct adoption of a tobacco-free campus policy. The school said in a news release the action authorizes university President Geoffrey Mearns to develop policy details and appoint a task force for the transition and implementation. The school said the process could take up to 18 months and is expected to include students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Northern Kentucky said it will become the third Kentucky public university to implement a tobacco-free policy, joining the University of Kentucky and Morehead State, while the University of Louisville is smoke-free.
NKU began restricting campus smoking to designated areas in 2006.
