Dispute ends in deadly shooting

The Whitley County Sheriff confirms a man was shot and killed this morning after a long time dispute with a man in the area. The shooting was on Ayers Road, near the Kentucky and Tennessee border.

Sheriff Colan Harrell says 41-year-old Keith Edward Mason shot and killed 60-year-old Robert Wayne Vanover around noon Friday. He says Mason called police to report the shooting

The sheriff says Mason was driving in his car when he says he encountered Vanover walking along Ayers Road. The two reportedly had a long standing feud. Mason told deputies he shot Vanover, but claims it was in self-defense.

The sheriff's department took Mason into custody but the sheriff says he's not been charged yet. The sheriff says his office is working with the Commonwealth's Attorney to decide if he should be charged now, or if the case should go to a grand jury.
