FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Public Service Commission has begun the process again of establishing a new area code for the western half of the state.
The agency made that announcement on Thursday.
The ever-growing use of cell phones has resulted in nearly all the numbers available in the 270 area code being taken. All 270 numbers are expected to be claimed by late 2014.
Implementation of the proposed new area code, previously designated as 364, had been delayed five times since 2006, largely because it wasn't yet needed.
Now, the Public Service Commission will have to decide whether to carve out an area for the 364 code within the region now using 270 or to simply overlay the 364 code.
