NEWPORT, Ky. (AP) - The Newport fire chief has retired after he was in a traffic accident that police say is being investigated as a personnel issue.
Newport City Manager Tom Fromme said Friday that Paul Uebel will retire effective Tuesday.
Newport police would not comment to The Kentucky Enquirer (http://bit.ly/10Ghk0G ) about details of the accident, saying it is under investigation. A police report is expected Monday.
Newport Police Capt. David Garnick would say only that the accident was Wednesday and that no one was injured.
Uebel had been a firefighter in Newport for nearly 25 years, and had been fire chief since 2008. Reached by telephone, he told the newspaper only that this was the right time to retire.
Fromme says senior Fire Capt. Pat Krogman is acting chief.
