Police: Nurse stole medication from nursing home patients

STANFORD Ky., (WKYT) - A Garrard County nurse is accused of using her job to steal medication from nursing home patients.

Lancaster police say Tina Abassi told them she took medications from the Golden Living Center in Stanford, leaving patients without medication for her personal gain.

Nursing home officials say she worked for them as a licensed practical nurse for about a year.

Abassi was arrested Friday at her home on Miles Drive in Lancaster.

Nursing home officials say Abassi has been suspended without pay.

They say they're starting an internal investigation as well as cooperating with the police investigation.

They’re trying to determine how many patient medications Abassi had access to and how many patients may have been affected.

Officers say when they showed up at her house Friday they saw her two year old daughter alone in the living room.

According to police, after Abbasi came to the door she told them she was under the influence and gave them several prescription painkillers and marijuana.

She's facing numerous drug charges as well as first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor.

One of her neighbors says she graduated with Abassi and is shocked and disappointed.

People who have loved ones in the nursing home also say they're disturbed and concerned.

Abassi hasn’t responded to our request for a jail interview.
