WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is heading to Michigan today to ask auto workers to support his plan for averting the so-called fiscal cliff.

Obama will tour an engine plant in Redford, Mich., a suburb of Detroit. He'll also speak to workers at the plant before returning to Washington in the afternoon.

The trip is part of Obama's effort to rally popular support for his agenda and to pressure Republicans to reach a deal on the fiscal cliff. Central to negotiations between Obama and Republicans is whether to raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

Support from auto workers helped Obama win Michigan and Ohio, two competitive states that were key to his re-election last month. Since the election, Obama has also returned to Pennsylvania to promote his solution for the fiscal cliff.
