Officer injured in chase

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A police officer is recovering at UK Hospital after being injured in a chase.

It started around midnight Friday morning on Alexandria Drive.

Police say the officer tried to make a routine traffic stop involving a suspected drunk driver.

As the officer approached the car, the driver took off on foot and climbed over a fence.

The officer followed, and fell several feet into a creek bed on the other side of that fence.

"I feel really bad for him, cause he's really really hurt right now. He was trying to catch someone and they shouldn't have even ran in the first place. They should have just cooperated with the police officer in the first place, and he would have never got hurt," said bystander Alisha Brooks.

Police say the officer, who has not been identified, was taken to UK Hospital with a fracture to his left leg.

The suspect remains on the run.
