Officer assaulted during traffic stop

Updated: Thu 6:57 AM, Jul 12, 2012

Police say an officer was assaulted after what started as a routine traffic stop.

Lexington Police tell WKYT they pulled over a suspected drunk driver early Thursday morning on Cambridge Drive, off Versailles Road. But the driver, Mario Espinoza, 32, then assaulted an officer before police say he took off running through a nearby park.

The officer was taken to UK Hospital, but is expected to be okay.

Police used K-9's to track Espinoza down. After arrested, he collapsed and was taken to UK Hospital to be checked out. Police say Espinoza is facing several charges, including DUI, assault and possession of cocaine.
