WKYT Investigates: On the firing range for 3-Gun

JESSAMINE COUNTY, KY. (WKYT) - "It's additive." Gun expert Tony Pignato of Bud's Gun Shop demonstrated a sport at the firing range called 3-Gun. He says it's very popular because it combines 3 guns and fast action: a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, and pistol. The object is to move as quickly as possible from target to target using all 3 guns. Accuracy and speed are key.

It's become so popular so events sell out. He told me, "you'll have pros from all over the United States, people will fly in from California, Arizona, and Texas." Safety is a priority. A range officer monitors every move of the competitor. During our demonstration, Pignato fired 27 shots in 22-seconds. It looked like he hit every target.

I asked Pignato about Senator Dianne Feinstein's bill that would ban magazines with more than 10 rounds, and 150 military assault style weapons. In 3-Gun they often use magazines with 30 rounds. Pignato says, "Just because we take this kind of firearm away from everybody. Does it eliminate criminals from having it? I can't say that." Taking away the magazines and semi-automatic guns would hurt the sport.

"There are a lot of people throughout the United States, worldwide, that compete in stuff like this. It's a great sport, it's a fun sport, and having additional rounds is just like we talked about, it's like having more than one golf ball in my golf bag," Pignato said.

Feinstein's bill is expected to have a tough time making it out of the Republican controlled House of Representatives.
