HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - A fire at a Mercer County apartment complex left one woman dead early Thursday morning.
It happened on North Greenville Street in Harrodsburg, just after midnight. Neighbors say if it weren't for a police officer passing by, more residents could have fallen victim.
"Next thing I know I'm getting a knock on the door loud as can be, 'Fire! Fire in the building! Harrodsburg police! Fire in the building!'" says Bob Bentley, a resident at Greenvilla Apartments. "Thank god they did that or I would've had no idea."
Flames and smoke were coming from an upstairs bedroom in the apartment complex. Crews were able to get neighbors out safely, but 72-year-old Suzanne Coullias died. The coroner says her preliminary cause of death is smoke inhalation.
Bentley lives in the apartment below Coullias'. He says she had underwent eye surgery the day before and was having trouble seeing. He was supposed to take her for a follow-up appointment in the morning.
"People around here are in shock," says Bentley. "She was one of the best neighbors you could ever have. I would say there's not a neighbor in this building who would say a bad word about her."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Neighbors believe Coullias was likely smoking in bed.
