Police impersonators kill father and hold wife, children hostage

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State police combed through a rural Knox County home Friday morning, searching for answers to a deadly home invasion.

The relatives of the family that live in the home on Salt Gum Road also live nearby. They watched in shock as the familiar home turned into a crime scene.

"It's just like a dream, it hasn't really sunk in," said Melinda Smith.

She says she's just 13 months older than Donald Mills. But she says their age wasn't the only thing that kept her close to her 29-year-old brother.

"He was a good father, he was an outgoing person and he'd help anyone in need," she said through tears.

Police say Mills was killed about 5 a.m. Friday when two men pretending to be police officers forced their way into his home.

"They kicked the door in and supposedly robbed them. They held his wife and two kids hostage," Smith said.

Investigators say Mills was shot to death when he fought back.

His wife rushed him to the hospital but he didn't survive.

The family says Mills had an 11 year old and a 7 year old son who watched as he was killed.

"It's a very big loss for us right now but it's a bigger loss that the boys are going to have to live without a father right now," Smith said as she cried.

Smith says they're holding on to the hope that police will catch the killers.

"He will be missed and they will be caught and they will be brought to justice for what they did," she said.

We're told Mills' sons are shaken but they're okay for the moment because their father's death hasn't sunk in yet.

Police are trying to track down a maroon Ford F-150 with chrome exhaust tips. They think it's connected to the violent crime.
