One killed in early morning fire in Mt. Sterling

MT. STERLING, Ky. (WKYT) - Around 3:00 this morning, the Montgomery County Sheriff says this house on E Street in Mount Sterling caught fire. They say it appears the fire started in the area of a carport on the left side of the house. The flames were so furious that they spread to the house next door.

"It was hot. The house next door had damage to it as well," said Montgomery County Sheriff Fred Shortridge.

The sheriff says the couple who live here got out with their two young boys, but he says Jeremy Callahan, a 30-year-old man who was visiting the family, died. He said Callahan was in a wheelchair.

"The lady that lived here attempted to assist him to get out but the heat got too hot and she couldn't assist him and he couldn't get out on his own," Shortridge said.

The sheriff says Matt Willoughby, one of the people who lives here, was taken to UK Hospital with burns. Family members here said he'll be okay.

People who live in the area say this is a very tight-knit community. They said they'll do everything they can to help the family.

"I hope everybody comes together and gets these boys some clothes and the mother and Matt as well. I'm going to be involved on helping them with some friends and try to help get them back together ," neighbor Sharon Vance said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's office is investigating with help from State Police and the State Fire Marshal's Office. They say they haven't found anything suspicious.
