One killed in overnight accident in Lexington

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A man is dead after a single-vehicle accident in Lexington overnight.

Police say they were called to the scene on the North side of Lexington just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning. They say the driver was traveling on Breathitt Avenue at the corner of Price Road when his car hit a tree.

The Fayette County Coroner identified the victim as 34-year-old Michael Thomas of Lexington.

"Michael was a beautiful person. Always wanted o do something positive for the kids," said Sonya Taylor, a family friend of Michael Thomas.

The 34-year-old father of two had been visiting friends and family living the neighborhood where he grew up, and officers say he was likely headed back to his Masterson Station home, driving down Breathitt towards Price Road when he hit a tree.

Friends were among those first at the scene, and they tell us Thomas was dragged underneath the car for several yards.

Taylor says Thomas was focused on his wife and children, and dedicated to bettering the community he leaves behind.

"He loved his momma," says Taylor.

Sunday night, friends and family gathered at Douglas Park for a vigil to pray for Thomas' family, and honor the life he lived.

"It's devastating. It's another person missing. And we lose a lot of people here," says Taylor.

Accident Reconstruction Units remained on the scene Sunday. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
