OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) - Owensboro police are investigating what caused an explosion that rattled windows, shook buildings and sent a plume of smoke high into the air.
The device detonated around 8:15 a.m. CDT Tuesday on a street between a motel and bowling alley. No property damage or injuries were reported, but people for blocks around were startled.
Sgt. Richard Glenn told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer it appears that someone set off a crude device, but it wasn't a commercial-grade explosive.
The blast left a whitish-gray spot on the street.
Officers went to the second floor of the motel and knocked on one of the doors. No one came out, and officers were posted on either side of the door while the investigation on the street below continued.
The investigation is ongoing.
