FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Couples who don't live together - including minors - would be able to obtain protection from abuse orders under a bill that has cleared a Senate panel.
The bill, which already passed the House, would add the term "dating relationship" to Kentucky's domestic violence law. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill Thursday morning. It will now proceed to the full Senate for consideration.
Democratic Rep. John Tilley of Hopkinsville sponsored the bill. He said Kentucky is one of three states that lack civil protection for couples who are dating or have dated. The bill requires that the relationship occurred within the last three years.
Courts will determine if a couple was indeed dating and will resolve issues regarding juvenile couples attending the same school.
