Panel moves bill to oversee Medicaid disputes

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky hospitals would have a quicker way to file Medicaid payment grievances against the state's managed care organizations under a bill approved by a House panel.

The House Committee on Health and Welfare passed the bill Thursday. The measure will proceed to the full House for consideration.

The bill would allow health care providers to file complaints with Department of Insurance to dispute Medicaid payments, or lack of payments, that managed care organizations provide on behalf of patients. Currently, complaints are filed with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, where there is a backlog of grievances.

The Department of Insurance, which has more authority to enforce the state's Medicaid payment laws, would create an independent review process for complaints.

The legislation is House Bill 5.
