Police: Woman freezes to death in Estill County

ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) Tears stain Valerie Rose's cheeks as she thinks about the way her neighbor, 55-year-old Vickie Arvin, died.

"It's very upsetting because this is such a small community, everybody knows everybody. It's such a shock, it's terrible," said Rose through tears.

A cold stream trickles down the Estill County mountain past the place where Kentucky State Police say Arvin froze to death.

Police say she was just about 50 feet from her home on Turkey Pen Branch Road when her car slid off the road and into a creek.

They say she fell into the creek as she tried to get out of her car.

Police believe she was able to crawl back up to her car, which is where they found her body Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, Arvin could've been outside for a few days before the cold killed her.

Rose says the death of her friend is especially hard to handle because Scotty, Arvin’s husband, also died on the same stretch of road in a different car accident.

"It's heartbreaking because she lost her husband a few years ago in the same spot," she said.

Rose says if any good news comes from this tragedy, it will be that it's bringing the community closer together. She says they’re now planning to check on their neighbors much more often.

She hopes the small wooden cross guarding the entrance to the road where Arvin and her husband died will be the last road side marker with a heartbreaking story to tell in their community.

Arvin’s funeral arrangements haven't been made yet.

KSP say they are still investigating her death but they don't suspect foul play.
