LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)-Lexington Police believe the shooting was random. They say they have no idea why former UK Football Player Shomari Moore was flagged down by two men on Elkhorn Road, other than his brand new Chrysler 300.

"He was minding his own business," explained Sgt. Pete Ford of the Lexington Police Department. "He was flagged down by two men, and stopped to aknowledge them and see why they were flagging him down."

Ford says he believes Moore may have thought the men needed help.

"Rolled down the window, suspect shot into the car at the victim. He was able to drive away."

Bloodied and shaken, Moore was able to make it up about two miles of Winchester Road where he found help in the form of a police officer.

"I think he was trying to get to a hospital, but due to his condition, he just wasn't able to make it."

Having difficulty breathing and speaking, police say Moore told officers the men tried to steal his car as he was whisked away to the hospital. Now, police say Moore, who was most recently affiliated with UK as a Graduate Assistant to Coach Cal during the 2011-2012 basketball season, may not have been the only person to see those men.

"We don't know how many people these men may have tried to flag down prior to this. So if anyone in the area saw these two men, we would like to speak to them."

Lexington Police believe Moore was shot with a small calibur handgun.
