Police: Truck driving wrong way in deadly Laurel Co. crash

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - A man is dead and another seriously injured after a crash.

Laurel County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision Monday night on Kentucky Highway 30, approximately four miles east of London.

A 2008 black Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Justin Wibbles of Greyhawk, was traveling west on Ky 30. Witnesses told police that the Silverado merged into the eastbound lane to pass some vehicles and when it met oncoming traffic, jumped over into the eastbound emergency lane, while still traveling westbound. At that point, a White 2000 Dodge van, driven by Jerry W. Thompson of East Bernstadt, merged into the emergency lane in what police believe to be an attempt to avoid a collision. It was struck head on by the black Chevrolet Silverado.

Thompson had to be extricated from the van. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling. The driver of the Silverado, Justin Wibbles, was airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.

The Laurel County Sheriff's Office and the Kentucky State Police Collision Analysis Branch are continuing their investigation.
