Police: Victim reports crime at KSP after driving drunk

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Saturday afternoon, just after two, Kentucky State Police got a unique visitor at Post 12 in Frankfort. The man was attempting to get their help.

"They found the subject had driven to post 12 in an attempt to report a theft from his residence here in Franklin County," explained Trooper Kendra Wilson.

Something was different about the victim, 67-year-old Victor Smith.

"(He) tried to make entry into the building. When troopers came out to investigate and see what kind of problem the man was having, they noticed the smell of an alcoholic beverage," said Trooper Wilson.

Troopers say Smith was drunk and had driven himself to the State Police post. Not a good combo, in their eyes.

"It is uncommon for people to come to State Police Post or a police department under the influence but it does happen on occasion," stated Trooper Wilson.

State Police say they took Smith's report, like they would with any victim, but unlike most of their victims instead of sending him on his way, they sent him to jail. They charged him with operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

"A victim is a victim and we want to take care of those victims, but it is not going to be acceptable anywhere in the commonwealth for those subjects to walk in, if they are a danger to themselves or others, or to drive in especially while they are under the influence."

While Smith was jailed, and since released, police say they are looking into his report of a theft. However, they cannot comment because it's now an active investigation.
