Police find escapee hiding in woods

Updated: Fri 11:51 PM, Aug 03, 2012

KNOX COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - After two days on the run, police say they have a jail escapee in custody once again.

Police say they arrested Daniel Patterson around 7 p.m. Friday in the woods near his mother's home in Knox County. Investigators tell WKYT he escaped from the Estill County Jail Wednesday.

His estranged wife went into hiding after the escape. Candace Patterson tells us she can now rest easier knowing he's been captured. The last two nights for her have been sleepless ones, filled with fear.

"Total hell and horror," described Patterson, "I mean, I've been hiding out so he would not know my whereabouts or know where I was. And just living in fear. Which I've lived in fear since May, but this has been a whole another level of fear."

Her husband Daniel Patterson escaped Wednesday morning as deputies were escorting him into the Estill County jail so he could appear in court for the domestic violence order Patterson filed against him. As soon as she found out he bailed, she took her children and went into hiding.

"I'm a mess right now. I haven't been able to sleep. Which I haven't been able to sleep before, but this is really, really messing with my sleeping. You can't sleep because you're always in total fear of knowing where he is and where he's at. What is he gonna do next?"

While on the run, law enforcement tell us he got help from a friend in Irvine and stole a truck. They say he then broke into his brother's house and stole a gun and money. They eventually found him hiding behind his mother's house in Knox County.

"He's put everyone in danger. Including myself, my children. He should be sentenced to the max for everything he's done," she said, "I'm going to come home, but it will take me a long time to get back to normalcy just because they've already let him escape once, it still scares me that he could escape again. So it'll take a while to get back to normalcy."

Daniel Patterson is now in the Knox County Detention Center. He was originally arrested for robbing a Cash Express in Irvine back in June.
