LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - An officer suffered only minor injuries after Lexington police say a drunk driver ran into his cruiser.

It happened around 2am Sunday morning, police say a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Short St. And Broadway in downtown Lexington, slamming into a police cruiser.

Police say the car then went off the road and up onto the sidewalk, before coming to rest against a building on Broadway. They say the driver then ran from the vehicle, but police were able to apprehend him about 100 yards up the road.

Lexington Police say the officer inside was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries, and that most of the damage to his police cruiser was on the front end.

The driver of the sedan, according to police, was transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries and then released to police.

Accident reconstruction was on the scene for several hours early Sunday morning. Alcohol is suspected.

Officials have not yet released the name of the driver or the officer involved in the accident. And their conditions are currently unknown.
