Police expand mission to mentor kids

EVARTS, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky police department has expanded its mission to mentor youth in Appalachia.

Officers John Teagle and William Clogston say the Evarts Police Department in Harlan County has organized anti-bullying sessions with students and a new "Cops and Kids Fishing" program.

Police Chief Lupe Blas told the Harlan Daily Enterprise that his officers are continually looking for ways to improve the lives of children in the area.

The comments were made during a recent City Council meeting at which the officers asked for and received support from elected officials.

Teagle said the fishing day will be held later this year and he hopes it can become an annual event.
