NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - The Nicholasville Police Department is offering a $5,000.00 reward in addition to a reward being offered by Crime Stoppers for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who shot a police officer.
Officer John Rainey was shot on the night of October 19th on Mapleleaf Drive in Nicholasville. Rainey spotted a man walking behind some homes, and stopped to make contact with him. Nicholasville Police say Rainey yelled out to the man that he was a police officer and that's when he was shot.
"Anybody who is going to shoot at anybody is a danger," explains Sgt. Scott Harvey with the Nicholasville Police Department, "but anyone who is going to shoot at a known law enforcement is really somebody we really need to get our hands on. We need to get our hands on him cause we need to protect this community, that is our job."
The bullet hit Officer Rainey in the back panel of his ballistic vest. Rainey spun around and returned fire after he was shot. The suspect then ran off.
"There was an all out manhunt for the shooter, we even had assistance from the Lexington Police Department with their helicopter. We're hoping someone will come forward with information because we need to get this person off the street."
Rainey was taken to the hospital, but has since been taken home.
Another officer was injured during the search for the shooter. We're told an officer fell into a hole and had to be taken to the hospital. He has been released at this time.
