Police make arrests in connection to dozens of car break-ins

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's terrorized a neighborhood for days - a string of break-ins that just wouldn't stop.

On Thursday, Lexington police told WKYT they had a huge break in the case. Police arrested Billy Wagers and Jacquelin Webster, saying they're responsible for many of the burglaries reported in the Chevy Chase area.

"I'm relieved. I'm really relieved because it's such an awful feeling. I've never been robbed before and I went in my car and my CD's and everything out of my center console were out," explained car break-in victim Kristin Fischer.

For people in the Chevy Chase area who have had their cars broken into, like Fischer, news of arrests is a big relief. Dozens of neighbors have woken up in the last two weeks to find their cars ransacked. Police say even some homes were burglarized. They believe a couple is responsible for the majority of the crimes - Billy Wagers and Jacquelin Webster.

"People were getting very upset, very shook up by it. There were changes in habits and behaviors. Lots of communication and lots of concern and to hear that someone's been arrested for at least part of it, hopefully this person's done it all," said neighbor Tony Burgett.

Police tell WKYT they had received tips that the couple might be responsible for break-ins in the area. They spotted them Thursday, and during questioning, say a lot of evidence helped connect Webster and Wagers to the crimes.

"And though we've arrested some folks who are responsible for quite a few of those, there's still plenty of people out there committing this crime," said Lexington Police Spokesperson Sherelle Roberts.

Police say Wagers and Webster were also wanted in Scott County for thefts.
