BOYLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A standoff situation on the Boyle-Casey County line has ended peacefully, after hours of negotiation.

We're told a social worker was making a welfare check around 10:30 Wednesday morning to a home on Forkland Road, not far from Junction City, where two brothers live. One of them had recently been involved in an accident.

We're told the social worker felt threatened when one of the brothers in the home showed a gun. We're told he tried to leave, but his van got stuck in the mud.

Police were called, and when a deputy showed up, we're told the two brothers did not come out. That's when a special response team was called.

Neighbors told us one of the men barricaded the two inside the home. He had reportedly threatened to shoot anyone who came close.

We're told the standoff ended around 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon when members of the special response team approached the home, and a tear gas substance was used, forcing the men to surrender.

Both were taken into custody. Shirley Coffman, 47, and James Wesley Coffman, 59, were arrested and charged with first degree wanton endangerment and 3rd degree terroristic threatening.
