Richmond man accused of stealing from city's salt supply

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - It's the stuff that's suppose to keep the city roads safe, salt in the city public works salt barn. But yesterday police say a man was helping himself to their supply.

"They was walking around the building looking around then they walked up to the salt bin and started putting salt in five gallon buckets," said supervisor Greg King.

"I guess with anticipation of snow yesterday they felt like they needed salt," King added.

The crew decided to sit back and call police and let them handle the situation.
Police later showed up and find the buckets of salt in the car and charged Nathan E. Gibbs with a misdemeanor.

"I don't know what the reason would be behind it other than they had a sidewalk needed to be cleaned off or something in these days whatever you do with salt," said King.

King says the value of the stolen salt is between 20 to 25 dollars
and the smallest amount can add up.

"If you have several people getting them a ton would soon add up and that gets into big money you know," King said.

King said there are security measures in place to make sure this doesn't happen again.
