NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Police are searching for a man they say shot a police officer Friday night.

The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. along Maple Leaf Lane in Nicholasville. Nicholasville police say the officer was out on routine patrol, when he noticed a man acting suspiciously. Police say when the officer got out of his cruiser, and went behind the home where he had seen the man, he was shot. Investigators say the officer then returned fire, but they aren't sure if the suspect was hit.

Police say the officer was hit in his bulletproof vest. He was taken to the hospital, but we're told he's expected to be ok.

Police searched for the suspect on the ground, and even received help from the Lexington police helicopter. However, as of 11:30 p.m. police had not made any arrests in the case.

The only description police have of the suspect is a man wearing dark colored clothing. Police say they're also waiting to see if anyone shows up at a hospital with a gunshot wound.

Nicholasville police ask anyone with information about this case to call Jessamine County Central Dispatch at 859-887-5447.
