LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - We're tracking a crime alert after a shooting at a populated Lexington park. It happened around 6:30 p.m. on Martin Luther King Boulevard at Duncan Park.
The park looks much different now than it did Sunday afternoon. It's a crime scene after police say a man was shot there in daylight with lots of people around. Many people had the same idea of enjoying the day at Duncan Park.
"We're getting several accounts from several witnesses who were around," said Lt. Eddie Hart, with the Lexington Division of Police. "It's a pretty day, so there's a lot of people out around the park."
But police say as soon as shots were fired, the crowd scattered, leaving a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his head lying on the ground underneath the swings.
"People are being hesitant to tell us whether they were here or not," said Lt. Hart. "The first two officers here started immediately with CPR because they were not getting vitals from the victim. They continued that until EC responded."
The victim is now at UK Hospital in critical condition.
"It's a children's playground, and we're lucky that no bystanders were injured," said Lt. Hart. "We don't know at this point whether this was just a bystander or the intended target of the shooting."
With crime scene tape lining the park, the forensic unit and detectives are investigating what would have led to a shooting in such a public place. Police say they are looking for multiple suspects in this case and are checking area businesses for surveillance.
Police say calls of shots fired in the area just before the actual shooting at Duncan Park have police looking for a specific car. It's a dark purple or black Grand Am with four or five men in it.
