Police still investigating string of burglaries near UK campus

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - "I came in the front door and immediately I see the TV is gone off the wall," explains Brian Barr, a student at U.K.

Barr and his four roommates were among some of the victims in a string of burglaries between November 21st and 25th of last year. Police say several homes along American Avenue were broken into, and there was a common theme; UK Students lived in each of the houses and were gone for Thanksgiving Break.

"So immediately your heart drops you wonder what is taken, what's left," says Barr

"I just couldn't believe it," says Quedale Phinazee. "We locked all the doors and did all the things you're supposed to do."

To make the situation worse, police say the intruders did more than just take the high-dollars items. Officers say whoever broke into these homes actually moved in for a while.

"There was food eaten, different toiletries used and taken," explains Det. Robert Sarrantonio, with Lexington Police. "So, we're hoping someone either heard something about someone stealing or trying to sell stolen Tvs or laptops."

Investigators have checked with local pawn shops and so far, none of the stolen items have turned up. They also believe the people responsible may live in the area.

"They knew who lived there," explains Det. Sarrantonio. "They knew they were college students... that would be away for Thanksgiving."
