Police warn of Lexington man tricking people into giving him money

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Police have issued an alert about a man, they say, is pretending to have mental health problems and taking money from strangers.

Lexington Police tell us Gary Thompson, 30, frequents the Zandale Shopping Center along Nicholasville Road.

Police say, on more than one occasion, he was arrested in the area for pretending to have mental disabilities and for begging shoppers for money.

Lexington Police say Thompson does have mobility issues and does use a wheelchair, but that he does not have any mental health issues.

In January, police charged him with theft by deception, begging and for creating false impression. He was arrested earlier this month on the same charges.

Police say Thompson has also tried this in Hamburg Pavilion, where he was charged with trespassing.

Police also have an open case against Thompson for stealing checks and using them.
