Police turn to public for clues in murder case

Updated: Thu 7:22 PM, Feb 02, 2012

Paul Brewer was found dead in his apartment on Natalie Drive in Mt. Sterling in December. The Sheriff says Brewer was murdered sometime between the evening hours of December 21st and the early morning of December 22nd. His body was discovered around 7:30 AM on December 22nd. His sister called police when he didn't show up for a doctors appointment.

"It's unlike him to be late for anything," explains Brewer's brother, John, "so when he didn't show up for his doctors appointment the whole family got worried."

John Brewer says their sister called 9-11 after no one was able to get in touch Paul. "We didn't know what else to do so we called police to do a welfare check on him."

Police say Brewer had multiple gun shot wounds and was found in his bed. Investigators do not believe there was any forced entry into Brewer's home and they think Brewer may have known his killer.

"It's something you read about, that you see happen in the big city," explains Brewer, "but you never think it's going to happen to you, that your family member is going to be the one killed."

Now, after getting minimal leads in the case, police are turning to the public for help.

"We're hoping that the public will be able to give us more history of him, and spark a nerve," said Sheriff Fred Shortridge

"Our family is just hoping and praying that there is someone out there that knows something that will help police in solving this case," explains Brewer. "It would help our family heal and move forward. Until then, we'll just continue to live day by day, suffering."

Sheriff Shortridge says Brewer is originally from Wolfe County but had spent some time in Powell County before moving to Montgomery County nine months ago.

The sheriff's office, along with the U.S. Marshal's Office, and FBI are working this case.
