Updated: Wed 7:55 PM, Jan 04, 2012

27 NEWSFIRST has just confirmed that well-known lawyer and political figure Gatewood Galbraith has died.

Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn says a family member found Galbraith dead in his bed early this morning. They believe he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Ginn says Galbraith had been struggling health-wise for some time now with congestion in his lungs. The coroner's office listed the cause of death as complications from chronic emphysema.

Galbraith ran for Governor this past November but lost. His running mate Dea Riley posted the following message on Facebook this morning:

"Dear Friends I have just been notified that Gatewood passed away last night. I am heading to Lexington to be with his family. Please say a prayer for his family and friends and all those who loved him. I am heartbroken."

Governor Steve Beshear released the following statement:

"Jane and I were shocked and saddened to learn of Gatewood's passing. He was a gutsy, articulate & passionate advocate. He will be missed."

There will be no autopsy. His body has been sent to Milward Funeral Home.

Galbraith leaves behind three children. Late Wednesday afternoon, his family released the following statement:

"Gatewood passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home last night from complications from pneumonia. He was surrounded by his immediate family. Everyone who knows Gatewood knows that he loved his family above all else, especially his daughters, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, and others who shared the closest parts of his life. We are all deeply saddened by his sudden loss.

He also had great passion for the people and politics of Kentucky and he would want to thank all of the people who supported him over the years. The family greatly appreciates the outpouring of love and support for Gatewood. In the next few days, the family will be communicating information regarding arrangements for celebrating Gatewood’s life, and a way for everyone to honor his passion, his gifts, and his legacy."
