Postal employee attacked by pit bull

Updated: Thu 7:36 PM, Jun 28, 2012

It was just another day on his usual route, but what Chris Lombardi didn't know was he'd end up in the hospital undergoing surgery, all after a vicious dog attack.

"Dog had a hold of his arms and legs, just biting him everywhere," said Keith Cook, recalling this morning's incident.

Cook hear the scream across the street, and jumped to action.

"Looked out the window and the first thing I told my wife was, get my gun, my air pistol I have. And I said no, I grabbed the boat oar and ran across. And just as I was hollering his name as I was coming, he let go," said Cook.

While she didn't go on camera, the owner says the family has had the male pit bull seven years, and that they normally keep him in the back yard.
Only today, the gate to the front yard, was left open.

"He delivers the mail, we see him everyday. We're like friends, we talk to him everyday," Cook said.

"Major damage to his left arm, and several, maybe eight, nine, bad puncture wounds on the left leg," continued Cook.

"My daughters kind of teared up and my wife was upset, to see someone hurt like that," Cook added.

So what happens to the dog and his owner? That's up to the animal control officer, who will present his findings to the county attorney.
