Powell County, Kentucky - An elected official in Powell County is facing a DUI charge after a minor accident outside the courthouse.
Police booked County Clerk Rhonda Barnett into the Powell County Jail around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon. They say around 10:30 Tuesday morning, Barnett backed a silver Dodge Ram into another car along the street right between the jail and the courthouse, then got out and went into the courthouse. Stanton Police were called to the scene and when they found out a county official was involved, they called Kentucky State Police. The trooper said Barnett had slurred speech and unsteady balance. According to the arrest citation, the trooper said there was no alcohol present on the preliminary breath test, but noted drugs could be involved.
"It shocked me!" said her friend, Eva Mae Wright.
"She's a fine person. I worked with her until 7:30 last night. I'm on her election board. I lost my husband in 2010. I lost my daughter in law in 2011. I lost my baby in 2012 and Rhonda was there to hold my hand the whole time," Wright said.
Officials at the circuit clerk's office said Barnett pleaded guilty to an alcohol intoxication charge stemming from an incident at the jail back in 2012.
