LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Rain or snow could create tricky travel conditions for those who have New Year's Eve plans.

Last year during this time, there were 1,314 crashes during the New Year's Eve holiday season.

It's always a busy night for Kentucky State Police, but add some wintry weather to the mix, and the travel situation on this New Year's Eve has the potential to be a recipe for disaster.

You can expect to see an increased police presence as troopers make sure those on the road obey the law.

"We have traffic safety check points, we have roving patrols, we have targeted enforcement details, where we look for impaired drivers, speeders. we want to maintain safe roadways through the holiday," says Trooper Kendra Wilson, with Kentucky State Police.

Also out in full force are road crews that will be helping to keep those traveling from running into slippery situations.

Crews are not expecting the roads to get slick until 2-3 a.m.

Sam Williams, the Director with Streets and Roads says the recent snowfall helped to pre-treat roads, "The fact that we had a snow a day or so ago, we still have some salt residue on the streets. That is in essence a pre-treatment there."
